Hello team fungi - Just in case you were unable to attend our in person event on Sunday, the consortium of mushroom clubs that hosts lectures over the wintertime, and of which we are a member, is having their first talk on Thursday ... and it's Eugenia again!  What fun(gi)!  Details below.

Bumps in the Road: The Challenges of Mainstreaming Magic Mushrooms

Thursday, February 6th, 7:30pm

Many people in psychedelic advocacy see psilocybin, the psychoactive molecule in many Psilocybe species, as having the potential to improve mental health and enhance spirituality. They ask what could possibly be problematic about legalizing and medicalizing a drug which might do so much good?  It turns out fitting magic mushrooms into our medical, legal, and commercial models is like trying to put a round peg into a square hole. I’ll break down some of the most significant bumps in the road to mainstreaming magic mushrooms use. This talk is derived from my book Have a Good Trip, an analysis of what is known, what is unknown, and what is unknowable about Psilocybe mushroom consumption, and a resource for anyone curious about using them.

Eugenia Bone is an internationally known food and nature writer whose work has appeared in many anthologies, magazines, and newspapers. She is a member of the faculty at the New York Botanical Garden where she teaches classes on mycophagy and psychedelic mushrooms. She is the author or co-author of nine books on food and biology, including the category staple Mycophilia, and most recently, Have a Good Trip: Exploring the Magic Mushroom Experience (October, 2024). She has been nominated for or won a variety of awards, including a James Beard Award. Eugenia is featured in the documentary directed by Louie Schwartzberg, Fantastic Fungi (2019), and in the Netflix children’s show about food, Waffles + Mochi (the mushroom episode) produced by Michele Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. She is a past president of the New York Mycological Society.
