Get ready for the coming foraging season with an interactive presentation and cooking demo with Chad Hyatt, a classically trained chef and author of The Mushroom Hunter’s Kitchen. Chad dove into mushroom hunting shortly after beginning his cooking career in the San Francisco Bay Area more than a decade ago, and quickly gained a local reputation for eating the “weird mushrooms” that nobody else collected. Today, his wild mushroom pop up dinners feature such delicacies as candied chanterelles, mushroom “bacon” of the woods, black trumpet jam and other surprising applications.
Chad’s presentation will challenge some of the standard lore about mushroom cookery, including beliefs about how to handle and cook mushrooms, where they fit into a meal, and even what mushrooms are good to eat -- elements he says are driven more by superstition and tradition than by an understanding of their flavors, aromas, and chemistry. Members will learn some useful skills to breathe new life into their mushroom cookery, with the help of some easy, delicious recipes anyone can try at home.
