For our May meeting, our main lecture will be by Elinoar Shavit. The tittle of her presentation is "Mushrooms in Amber and Copal." Elinoar will discuss new discoveries of mushrooms in some of the oldest amber deposits ever found, discuss some evolutionary changes in mushrooms, and the possible benefits to science that studying mushrooms encapsulated in younger, sub-fossilized amber and copal could offer. Some of the amber pieces that Elinoar will discuss have never been seen before, and others from her one-of-a-kind collection were presented in her essay published in FUNGI Magazine: Mushrooms in Mexican Red Amber and Colombian Copal – a Fantastic Voyage, (FUNGI, April 2019, Vol. 11, No. 5).
Elinoar Shavit is an ethnomycologist specializing in mycological and cultural research regarding medicinal mushrooms, desert truffles, and the traditional use of fungi and plants by indigenous people around the world. Elinoar is a contributing editor at FUNGI magazine, past President of the New York Mycological Society, and past Chairperson of the Medicinal Mushrooms Committee at the North American Mycological Association. Elinoar is also a gemologist and an alumna of the Gemological Institute of America.
