  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Featured presentation about DNA sequencing.  In anticipation of MAW’s rollout of its own DNA sequencing program, this month’s meeting will stream selected segments of Sigrid Jakob’s recent presentation “Introduction to DNA Sequencing”, to be followed by a live Q&A session with Sigrid and discussion of MAW’s own plans for sequencing.   Sigrid is currently the president of the New York Mycological Society, and active in the Fungal Diversity Survey (FunDiS).  She has trained members of the NYMS to do sequencing.  Her presentation addresses the purposes of sequencing and provides a non-technical explanation of the process involved in getting a sequence and interpreting the results.  For purposes of Tuesday night’s meeting, the video of her presentation last month has been divided into segments and posted to MAW’s YouTube channel.

As mentioned in previous meetings, MAW has already acquired the necessary equipment and a group of MAW members (the “DNA committee”) is actively working on plans to add sequencing to MAW’s other activities.  The head of the DNA committee, Tom McCoy, will describe their recent activities and plans.

Visit https://mawdc.org/Fungal-DNA-Sequencing for links to additional YouTube presentations about DNA sequencing.  Damon Tighe’s lecture “Mushroom DNA sequencing for the community scientist” is highly recommended.

Announcements and news.  MAW president Elizabeth Hargrave will highlight upcoming MAW activities (including MAW’s participation in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival starting on June 22 until July 4) and a planned July 4 MAW picnic.

Virtual ID table to include iNaturalist submissions.  The virtual ID table will show pictures of mushrooms currently being found in our area.  We will be supplementing the ID table presentation with recent photos submitted to MAW’s iNaturalist project.  Download the iNaturalist app to your mobile device, join MAW’s DC fungi project. Upload your mushroom photos before the meeting to get your mushrooms on the ID table for discussion.

August 1 deadline for Sequanota foray participation grants.  MAW is offering two grants to local students interested in mycology to cover registration and lodging costs to participate in MAW’s annual weekend Sequanota foray in early September.  DC area students 18 and over may apply.  The application deadline is August 1.  If you know a DC area student who is 18 or older who would be interested in this opportunity to attend the Sequanota foray, let them know.  Get details about these grants as well as MAW’s $1,000 undergraduate/graduate mycology research subsidy grant (application deadline October 1) at https://mawdc.org/scholarships.

We're virtual again this month via Zoom.  Here are the login credentials, including passcode should you need it.
