Our special guest is Jacob Kalichman (aka Pulk), a favorite myco-pal of MAW, who you may remember from his recent talk and from Sequanota. Jacob wrote the species text for the new book! Jacob is currently a field mycologist collecting for the Matheny Lab at the University of Tennessee.

If you're like me, you probably have an old, beat up copy of the original 1981 edition, National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, lying around somewhere in your house. That book was edited by the late, great mycologist and author Gary Lincoff, who you may know from the popular documentary Fantastic Fungi or my personal favorite, Know Your Mushrooms. Although the Audubon Guide has been one of the most popular field guides for mushrooms, it is seriously outdated!

The new edition reflects the taxonomic revolution fomented by the results of DNA sequencing. It is a gorgeous book, organized according to the latest phylogenetic arrangement from the Assembling the Fungal Tree of Life project. The book features nearly 2,900 full-color photographs, revealing the astounding variety of forms, colors, and conditions of 668 species of mushrooms that can be found all throughout North America.

This event will feature a discussion with Jacob led by fabulous MAW-member, mycologist, and Maryland Principal Park Naturalist Serenella Linares. There will also be a book signing. There will be drinks and light snacks. The price of admission is $30, which buys you a spot at the party AND a copy of the book. The location will be in Bethesda, MD. Registered guests will receive an email with the exact location of the party a week before the event.
