MAWDC Monthly Meeting - June

  • 06 Jun 2023
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • virtual via Zoom

It's June in DC! We don't know about you, but we're looking forward to seeing the first chanterelles and boletes of the summer. And to our June meeting, of course!

The meeting will be held via Zoom (link below).

MAW President Elizabeth Hargrave will kick things off with updates on club activities and fungi in the news.  Annie Weissman will lead the virtual ID table, highlighting recent fungal finds posted on MAWDC's iNaturalist project

For our feature presentation, we are very excited to welcome mycologist and philosopher Dr. Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian to give a talk titled: Nonbinary, Cryptic, and Subversive: Queer Mycology

Dr. Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian is Visiting Professor of Biology at Bard College and the Bard Prison Initiative. Her research focuses on fungal taxonomy, diversity, evolution, symbiosis, and ecology, particularly of the less studied fungal groups, such as the insect-associated Laboulbeniales. She is a co-founder of the International Congress of Armenian Mycologists, which seeks to jointly protect Armenian sovereignty and biodiversity. Patricia also studies philosophy of science and queer theory, exploring how mycology and other scientific disciplines are situated in and informed by our sociopolitical landscape. Her work The science underground: mycology as a queer discipline appears in Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience. Her forthcoming book, Forest Euphoria, will be published by Spiegel & Grau.
