Summer is heating up, so take a break from the steamy woods and come cool off at our August meeting! We promise our discussion on pathogenic fungi will chill you to the bone...

The meeting will be held via Zoom (link below). MAW President Elizabeth Hargrave will kick things off with updates on club activities and fungi in the news.  Program Chair Annie Weissman will lead the virtual ID table, highlighting recent fungal finds posted to the MAWDC iNaturalist Project.  

For our short program, we welcome MAWDC Vice President Tom McCoy, who will tell us all about Beatrix Potter!  Besides being an author of children's books and an accomplished artist, Potter was a serious amateur mycologist, ecologist, and conservationist in a Victorian era that didn't permit women access to scientific circles.  

Our featured speaker for the evening is author Emily Monosson. She will be discussing her new book Blight: Fungi and the Coming Pandemic, which just dropped on July 18!  Annie will be facilitating the discussion with some queries, so remember to email programs@mawdc.org to make sure yours get answered! You'll also be able to jump in and ask Emily your questions live on Zoom. 

Emily Monosson is the author of Natural Defense, Unnatural Selection, and Evolution in a Toxic World; she also edited Motherhood the Elephant in the Laboratory: Women Scientists Speak Out. Trained as a toxicologist, she is now a science writer, and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She lives in Montague, Massachusetts.
