Come celebrate the end of winter at our March MAWDC Monthly meeting! Mark your calendar!  

The meeting will be held via Zoom (link below). MAWDC President Elizabeth Hargrave will kick things off with updates on club activities and fungi in the news.  Culinary Chair April Thompson will share eye candy and showcase MAWDC’s work with edible mushrooms in her new segment, The Kitchen Table. Program Chair Annie Weissman will lead the virtual ID table, highlighting recent fungal finds posted to the MAWDC iNaturalist Project.

For our short presentation, Adam Carranza of the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter will highlight some of the Maryland Chapter's top priorities this year, the EmPOWER program and the Transportation and Climate Alignment Act. Like MAWDC, The Sierra Club shares a deep commitment to connecting people with nature and fostering a love for our planet. The Sierra Club is the largest grassroots environmental organization in the US. Their mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect Earth's wild places, promoting responsible resource use and inspiring stewardship of both nature and humankind. 

Our main presentation will feature Dr. Denny Wang’s talk, “Weird sex in death caps: the unisexual reproduction in invasive Californian Amanita phalloides.”

Denny (Yen-Wen) Wang is an evolutionary researcher and mycologist graduated from Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and currently a post-doctoral associate in the Biostatistics Department at Yale School of Public Health. His research focuses on the fungal genetics and their ecological roles. He mainly studies the genus Amanita including their ectomycorrhizal association with trees and mating system during his Ph.D. He has now switched his study focus to Ascomycetes especially mycoparasites such as Trichoderma and Tolypocladium.
